Ridiculous. Building a mosque near Ground Zero is completely insensitive no matter how you slice it. I don't care if Islam is a religion of peace, it's still insensitive and I wouldn't stand for it either. But now building an I-Hate-Muslims-and Gays Christian Church near Ground Zero just to even the playing field with the mosque next door is completely childish.

There should be a stop on building religious buildings. There are hundreds of thousands of them already in the US and many are facing foreclosures and bankruptcies. Save the money for something more useful like donating money to food banks or helping the hardest hit by the recession. You know, helping people. Isn't that what churches do?

More Atheists on TV, Please

Dr. Gregory House, of House, is the most openly atheist character on TV. And I love him. Finally, I said to myself. In all the years and hundreds of hours I spent watching television, I can only recall two other atheist characters.

The first is Jen Lindley of Douchebag's Creek (aka Dawson's Creek). But because Michelle Williams's character was the bad girl from New York who rebelled and had sex at 12, her atheism came off as just another flaw in her character. Though I was happy that in the series finale, as she was dying from a heart condition that was never mentioned before (lame, I know), she did not 'find' God. But she hoped her daughter would. Whatever.

The second is Dean Winchester from Supernatural, of course. Dean questions the existence of a loving God in the face of...well, hell on Earth, basically. He states that for years he's been fighting demon ass and wonders where the hell God is, if he does indeed exist. Sam, on the other hand, has no problem believing in God and the angels. Unlike Touched By An Angel (one of the stupidest shows ever along with 7th Heaven), this show portrays angels and demons as being on the same level; cruel, violent, vigilant and way worse than even the cruelest human being.

This is my favorite Dean Winchester quote:

See, this is why I can't get behind God.
If He doesn't exist, fine. Bad crap happens to good people. That's how it is. And no rhyme or reason, just random, horrible evil. I get it. Okay? I can roll with that. But if He is out there, what's wrong with Him? Where the hell is He while all these decent people are getting torn to shreds? How does He live with Himself? You know, why doesn't He help?

And here's another one:

Dean: If there's a god, what the hell is he waiting for, huh? Genocide? Monsters roaming the earth? The freaking apocalypse? At what point does he lift a damn finger and help the poor bastards that are stuck down here?

Couldn't have said it better myself. There's one other quote I love. This is what Dean thinks of angels on account of their unquestioning obedience to God, whom they've never met:

I love this show. Supernatural is one of those rare comedic horror shows. Buffy was the first, for me at least. I know a lot of people didn't get Buffy but that show was brilliant. And Joss Whedon, who created it, is an atheist and thank God whatever for that.

Needless to say, there should be more openly atheist characters on television. To the heads of all the networks, whoever you are, we want more atheists on TV. Please.

Pat Robertson Needs to Shut the Fuck Up

I am all for free speech; free speech for everyone. But this retard is just poison incarnate. Maybe the one true to way to shut him up would be for everyone who listens and tunes in to this retard to wake the fuck up and stop listening to this jackass. But alas, the multitudes are far too happy letting a fundamental and possibly (very likely) insane fuckhead do the thinking and speaking for them.

I hereby declare you, Pat Robertson, DOUCHEBAG of the decade, century and millennium. Enjoy these honors, Pat, you have truly earned them.

Life Before Her Eyes Review

Having watched The Life Before Her Eyes (2007) last night, I felt compelled to write a review. The movie stars Uma Thurman as Diana and Evan Rachel Wood as Young Diana based on the book by Laura Kasischke. The title gives away the movie as it is about Diana's life flashing before her eyes. The movie flashes back and forth between a young Diana, 17 and an older Diana, 32 or so. Diana and her best friend Maureen are in the girls' bathroom at their high school when they hear screams and shooting from without. A fellow student, Michael, bursts in armed with a semi-automatic or some such large weapon. He aims at the girls, asking them which one he should kill. We don't find out until the end of the movie which girl is shot.

Young Diana is a slut. At least she thinks of herself as one. She has lost her virginity and is involved with a professor. She has also gotten pregnant and had an abortion. Her best friend, Maureen, played by Susan Sarandon's daughter, Eva Amurri, is the good girl type who goes to church, is against abortion (revealed by a sticker on her car that reads CHOOSE LIFE), and premarital sex.

Given this good versus evil dichotomy, I should have realized soon into the movie which girl was going to die. And the movie doesn't disappoint. Diana tells Michael, the shooter, to kill her, thus sacrificing herself for her wholesome Christian friend.

The movie was good, if not a bit confusing. Diana, the older version, never existed as she was killed in the school shooting at 17. But we see her life "flash" before her eyes; as her life would have been had she survived the school shooting.

I did not appreciate the ending nor the moral of the film. Diana sacrificed herself for her friend may seem noble at first but glorifying sacrifice and martyrs is ridiculous for me. What's so great about sacrifice. Why are we moved it? It may go all the way back to Jesus but even so, I don't see sacrifice as a virtue.

That Diana was the bad seed in this movie is quite evident. That she deserved to live less than her religious friend is simply wrong. It seems as though by sacrificing herself for her friend was her only road to redemption. That's why this movie, though overall good, is a piece of crap.
